Dear CASA Families:

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  CASA classes begin on Tuesday, September 4th.

Our first day of school schedule will be:

A Hour: 12:15-1:10

B Hour: 1:15-2:10

C Hour: 2:15-3:10

Important Items to start the school year:

ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS: All new students are invited to the CASA orientation on Wednesday, August 29, from 1:15-3:10. Come tour the building and meet students from other districts who will be attending CASA with you.  Please call the CASA main office at 248-586-8860 to let us know if you will be attending.

CASA CALENDAR: CASA serves students from 7 different public school districts: Berkley, Clawson, Ferndale, Lamphere, Madison, Oak Park and Pontiac.  Because the schools do not have a unified calendar we occasionally have minor scheduling conflicts. To meet state attendance requirements, we have worked hard to develop a compromise calendar, however, sometimes your home school may have a half day or a day off for a holiday or professional development when CASA is in session.  When that occurs, students are expected to attend their scheduled CASA Classes.  Students and parents will be expected to sign an attendance contract for CASA that will be in the student handbook.  If your student will be absent, please call our attendance line at 248-586-8860, and press 2.  Sending schools often do not report absences to CASA.  To excuse an absence, parents must call the school within 48 hours of the absence.

TRANSPORTATION: Due to our limited parking, we highly recommend that students take the busses provided from their home schools. Bussing information is enclosed.  Parking passes for the CASA student parking lot are available, please see the forms included in this mailing.  Students are reminded to park carefully if they park on the street.  Cars blocking driveways will be towed.

In response to what teachers have been observing in their classes, and to what research is increasingly showing about the detrimental effects of cell phone usage in classrooms, several CASA teachers will be implementing cell-phone-free classrooms.   As parents, you may be concerned about being able to reach your student in case of an emergency.  As always, you may call the office at any time and we will ensure that messages get to your student as quickly as possible.  Students will be allowed to have their phones during passing time.  The main office number is 248-586-8860.

STUDENT HANDBOOK: On the first day of school, students will be given a copy of the Student Handbook containing papers requiring student and parent signatures. Please sign and return them with your student by the end of the first week of school.

STUDENT SCHEDULES:  Your student’s CASA schedule is was sent in our summer mailing.  Should there be a problem with your student’s schedule, please contact their home school counselor first so that we can make the appropriate changes.  CASA classes are very full and making changes may be a bit challenging.  Schedule changes may be made during the first ten instructional days of the semester only.

EMAIL: We will be sending this letter out via our school email system.  If you did NOT receive an email with this letter from CASA, PLEASE contact our office so we can put your correct email address in our system.
