News from CASA

From The Director:

November 20, 2018

Dear CASA Families:

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is already upon us.  There have been so many wonderful things happening at CASA this fall.  Here are some highlights:

Students from the Pontiac School District are attending CASA for the first time this year. Twenty-two students take the bus down from Pontiac to CASA every day.  We also have students from Madison school district joining CASA again for the first time in four years. It’s very exciting!

This year CASA is offering three new classes.  Creative Communications students get the opportunity to explore and write in several different genres.  In the science department we are offering International Medicine / Global Heath where students study and discuss heath issues and crises that impact our global community and how different countries address those problems. In AP Research, students develop a research question and spend the whole year working on writing a comprehensive research paper and creating a presentation that they will give in front of an Internal Review Board in the spring.

We have had many classes go on trips to enhance their learning.  The AP Environmental Science class went on its first of three water testing trips.  The Religions class visited the Hindu Temple in Troy, and several of our science classes visited the Detroit Zoo.  Students will be visiting the DIA later this month as well.

This week, the AP Physics class used three giant trebuchets to launch pumpkins into the air as part of their learning about velocity and trajectories.  And, as I walk down the halls, I get to read poems and statements of gratitude in a project executed by Mr. Haun’s English students.

You may have heard that this year marks the 35th anniversary of CASA’s founding.  To celebrate, we will be having an all-classes CASA Reunion on Friday, April 26, and a CASA Past, Present and Future Expo on April 27.  We are currently seeking volunteers for the planning committee for this event.  Please let me know if you would like to help.

We are in the midst of a wonderful school year!

Best,

Jennifer Pye Gebbie
